Is "Forbidden Fruit" not a taboo? How often have you been told:
- You can't eat Chocolate or Icecream; they will make you fat
- Eating sweets will rot your teeth
- Margarine is bad for your cholesterol
There is a long list of what many diet cultures label as Forbidden Fruits. And while much of this advice stems from truth, South African nutritional guidelines shift the focus away from strict deprivation and instead encourage adequacy, balance, and variety.
Everything In Moderation: The Golden Rule
To put things in perspective, medical professionals prescribe warfarin—a substance historically used to make rat poison—to patients to thin their blood. The point I am trying to make is that even highly toxic substances, in extreme moderation, have their uses and are permissible under medical supervision.
Being a Diabetic, I am well aware of the Forbidden Fruit list. However, as my Doctor told me right at the beginning: Don't deny yourself entirely.
Instead of demonizing specific foods, the key is to use sugars and saturated fats sparingly. Set aside one day a week as your designated "forbidden fruit" day—a day to break the rules in Moderation. Herein lies the secret. It means that we can have a small plate of ice cream or a small plate of fruit salad, but not ice cream and fruit salad together.
Plan Your Snacks to Beat Cravings
This is a vital tip. If you want to break the chain of impulsive snacking on nutrient-poor foods, you must plan your snacks in advance. Everyone tells you to stop snacking, but snacking itself is not the problem. It's what you snack on and how much of it you consume that does the damage.
Firstly, if you know you usually get hungry at about 10 am:
- Snack proactively at 9:30 - 9:45 am. This prevents the sudden hunger spike that leads to reaching for chips or a Coke.
- Plan and prepare your snacks for the day the night before.
- Ensure that you consider your snacking habits when preparing your grocery shopping list (which does not mean buying potato chips and soda for the month).
The Importance of a Nutritional Breakfast
Another major contributing factor to your midday snacking is your breakfast. "But I don't eat breakfast," you might reply laughingly, brushing off the problem. Skipping breakfast is a devastating start to your day. And No! Coffee and doughnuts do not constitute a healthy breakfast. This type of meal is devoid of sustained nutrition, causing you to run out of energy rapidly and triggering severe snack cravings later on.
A nutritional breakfast is vital. If you need to snack, plan and prepare it in advance. For more insights on starting your day right, see my post on Nutritional Breakfasts.
